Guests like personal touches. They love to feel welcome and taken care of. I encourage my team to talk to the guest. Ask where they are from, why are they in town? What special plans do they have? Make suggestions for things to do! We leave notes for our guests - Fun facts about Maine, fun facts about the area or even the building they are staying in.
Guests seek an experience—they desire to be pampered. As hosts, it is our responsibility to provide this for them. In housekeeping, we earn cash tips for our efforts, while vacation rental hosts receive 5-star ratings. Properties with 5-star ratings enjoy 20% more bookings. Here are five small touches that can enhance your guest experience:
Lighting- This simple yet effective gesture will have your guests expressing gratitude endlessly. Picture arriving at an unfamiliar place in the dark. By leaving an outdoor light on, a small kitchen light (I recommend the one above the stove), and a lamp in each bedroom and living room, you create a welcoming atmosphere. You might even consider a mirror light in the bathroom! This warm and inviting setup will ease any anxiety your guests might have about hidden corners.
Basic Essentials - Having a small supply of toilet paper, paper towels, and kitchen basics is crucial. Providing coffee filters, coffee, and some bottled water in the fridge shows guests you care. After a long journey, these items should be standard upon their arrival. If you have on-site laundry, I suggest supplying essentials for it, along with a variety of cleaning supplies, which should be well-stocked and frequently replenished. Ensure your bathroom is equipped with items like shampoo, conditioner, lotion, body wash, and travel-sized toothpaste and toothbrushes for guests to take with them.
Luxury Linens - They don't have to be expensive, but they do have to be soft! Spa quality towels and bed linens will have your guests wanting to know where they can get some for their own home. Plush pillows, comforters and throws are a must have for the ultimate dream experience.
Landscaping- Both indoors and outdoors. The first impression your guests will have upon arrival is the sight of outdoor planters brimming with vibrant blooms. Create a picturesque scene and continue the theme indoors! Hardy plants such as pothos or succulents can add a homely touch.
Communication - Ensure your guests are aware of your availability! I suggest reaching out the day after they arrive and every few days afterward until their departure. Inquiring if they need anything or have questions about the area fosters trust and demonstrates that they are more than just a reservation.
Beyond the Welcome, into your next adventure,
Kristen
